PA lake special-regulation programs, explained

PA Lake Fishing Almanac · reviewed Oct 4, 2026 against the 2026 Fishing Summary

2026 Fishing Summary

Most lakes follow statewide rules. Pennsylvania calls them Commonwealth inland waters regulations (2026 Fishing Summary, p. 10). Some lakes are in a program that changes sizes, limits or seasons for some species. The program applies only to the species it names; other species keep the statewide rules.

Big Bass Program (2026 Summary, p. 11)

For Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted Bass: 15-inch minimum and 4 a day (combined) from Jan. 1 through April 10 and from June 13 through Dec. 31; catch and immediate release only from April 11 through June 12, with no tournaments. Big Bass lakes that are stocked trout waters close to all fishing from February 16 until the trout opener, unless they are open to year-round fishing.

Brood Stock Lakes (2026 Summary, p. 15)

From April 1 through May 31, Muskellunge, Tiger Muskellunge, Northern Pike and pickerel are catch and release only. The Summary says the rule restricts harvest and fish consumption during an FDA-mandated withdrawal period, because fish anesthetics are used in culture operations for these species.

Catch and Release Lakes (2026 Summary, p. 15)

All species, all year: every fish goes back unharmed.

Panfish Enhancement (2026 Summary, p. 15)

Minimum lengths for the panfish PFBC lists at each lake — sunfish 7 inches; crappies and Yellow Perch 9 inches — with 20 a day of each listed species and no more than 50 panfish combined when more than one species is listed. “Sunfish” includes Bluegills, Pumpkinseeds and Redear Sunfish; “Crappie” includes Black and White Crappies. Each lake page names the species PFBC lists for that lake.

Miscellaneous Special Regulations (2026 Summary, pp. 16–17)

One-off rules for single waters, for example a bait restriction or a crappie limit. Each lake page carries that lake's own line.

Closed to fishing

A few waters are closed by regulation. Their pages stay up for reference with a plain banner.

Where this comes from

We map each lake to its program with PFBC's special-regulation GIS data (PASDA, Mar 2026) and summarize the rule from the Summary with the page number. When the GIS data and the Summary disagree, the lake page says so and tells you to check the posted signs.
